As the nation continues to mourn the tragedy of Newton and other similar tragedies that took place after it, public officials ask the citizens to take action. Today, U. S. Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein will introduce an updated version of her bill to reinstitute the assault weapon/large capacity clip ban that expired in 2004. This bill is called “The Ban on Assault Weapons Bill.”

Specifically, the bill would:

• Ban the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of 120 specifically-named firearms and certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, and shotguns;

• Ban large-capacity ammunition feeding devices, capable of accepting more than ten rounds;

• Strengthen the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and state bans;

• Protect legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment and exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting and sporting and antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons;

• Require that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act; ban the transfer of grandfathered large-capacity ammunition feeding devices; establish a voluntary buy-back program for grandfathered assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition feeding devices; and impose a safe storage requirement for grandfathered firearms.

As Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson  joined Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel at a Press Conference on Assault Weapon Ban (see: Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson Joins Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel at Press Conference on Assault Weapon Ban),  The Mayor also supports this bill and encourages the citizens of Gary, IN to take an active role in the effort to prevent tragedies involving gun violence from happening.
