The Gary Police Department on May 25th will be hosting the first Gun Turn In for 2013. All those who have a gun are encouraged to bring them and turn in to the police for a Wal-Mart gift card. $50 will be given for hand guns, shotguns, and rifles. If an assault weapon is turned in then a $100 gift card will be given. For this turn in there will be 7 drop off points (listed below). Last year over 500 weapons were turned in with 68 of them in the last one in December 29th.
Mayor Freeman-Wilson is trying to clean up Gary streets but it is a difficult and complex problem. “When we see the devastation in communities like Newtown, CT and Gary, Indiana, I am reminded of how pervasive the problem of gun violence is and how complex the solution must be. One substantial step towards addressing this plague is a federal ban on assault weapons,” said Mayor Freeman-Wilson. The hopes are high that we will collect even more weapons this year and make our communities even safer.
