Concert Venue Change
The location of the Bell Biv DeVoe concert has been changed to West Side High School Theater, 9th Ave & Gerry Street. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster and the West Side Theater Box Office. For more information, call (219) 977-2168.
Deadline Extension Rental Property Registration
The deadline for registering rental property has been extended to April 30, 2013. Applications are available at the City of Gary Building Department located at 401 Broadway, suite 307. Gary, Indiana 46402, or on the City website; www.gary.in.us
Mayor Press Conference on Jobs
Yesterday, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson hosted a press conference at City Hall to address a topic of great concern – bringing jobs to the city. The City of Gary’s New Jobs New Day initiative and Work One NW Indiana, together with TravelCenters of America (TravelCenters), operator of the Petro Stopping Centers® travel center brand, are partnering to provide new job opportunities for Gary local citizens. Representatives from TravelCenters announced a series of job fairs to be held beginning April 29 to hire for 160 full- and part-time positions for the newly built Petro Stopping Centers location at I-80/I-94, Exit 9 (3001 Grant St.) in Gary. The new facility is scheduled to open late May, 2013.
Job fairs will be held at the following locations and times. Applicants should bring a current resume with them to the job fair.

City of Gary’s 311 App Launch
The launch of the City of Gary’s 311 app and the upgrade to Microsoft Office 365 were featured in The Times. Kudos to our Dept. of Information Technology, General Services and Public Works for taking the lead on these initiatives and helping us all work more efficiently. Barbershop Initiative
The Barbershop Initiative held on April 13 was an overwhelming success! More than 150 people in all 7 shops received men’s health information and asked questions about how they can get other medical preventative checks. The barbers also distributed information on prostate cancer to share with their clients.
TBLA School Board Vacancies
Thea Bowman Leadership Academy (TBLA) Charter School will have two School Board vacancies beginning July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2016. Any citizen interested in serving on the Board should submit a letter of interest and a resume or vita addressed to: Drexel Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc., P. O. University of Chicago Students and City of Gary’s Redevelopment Department
University of Chicago graduate students in partnership with the City of Gary’s Redevelopment Department will begin volunteering as survey takers of vacant buildings throughout the city. This semester, the students are going to collect data in Aetna, Glen Ryan, downtown, Emerson, the Lake Street area of Miller, and the Broadway corridor from 11th to 80/94. The data collected will be analyzed and suggestions made on next steps to address the vacant structures. Findings from the data collection will be shared with the public in the fall of 2013.
